Phoenix is a city found which is found in central Arizona. The city neighbors Flagstaff, about 150 miles to its north and Tucson which is located 150 miles to its south. The terrain of the land on which it lies is mainly a flat arid basin. The expansion of the city has absorbed the surrounding communities of the Mesa, the Tempe, the Scottsdale, the Sun City and the Glendale.
Phoenix’s attractions are enhanced by a warm climate throughout the year, a modest cost of living and a dry atmosphere of the desert on which it is found. As such, the group most attracted to this city and its environs are mainly the retired people. However, this influx of retirees has led to a population outburst, thereby putting a strain on some of its amenities.
The average day time temperatures in Phoenix are 45 deg. C and 20-25 deg. C. during summer and winter respectively. As such, midday activities are usually avoided at all costs during the summer. Most tourists usually flock to the city in winter. Therefore, if one wants to avoid the tourist traffic at this time, they can instead visit during late fall and early winter.
The gigantic Saguaro cactus is found in the Sonoran Desert to the northern part. Apparently, this is also where Phoenix is situated. The plant can grow up to heights of over 10 meters. The desert is also characterized by mesas of various rocks that are colored differently, desert vegetation, mountains and so on. The land generally presents mixed features of both ruggedness and beauty.
Other than the warm climate, Phoenix and its surroundings also have many other interesting sights that attract visitors to the city. These include museums, arts centers as well as historic sights. For those tourists who have a passion for flora, the Desert Botanical Museum offers some wonderful collections of them, specifically showcasing the desert plants from many deserts around the world. Visiting the museum is a good learning experience as well as a recreational activity. Just near the museum, there is the Phoenix Zoo which many people who visit the city tend to like it a lot. The zoo has exhibitions of the tough animals that live in the desert. Other museums are the Heard Museum which exhibits the culture of the Native Americans, the Pueblo Grande Museum for archeology, the Mining and Mineral Museum, the Deer Valley Rock Art Centre and the Chicano Museum.
The Mystery Castle is a historical site attraction located just at the base of the South Mountains. It was constructed before the year 1945 using bottles, rocks and other waste objects. The Taliesin West is located in Scottsdale. For visitors who may not know, this was the home to Frank Lloyd Wright, the US architect of all times. Other historic sights are the Cosanti Foundation and the reconstructed cowboy town of Rawhide. The South Mountain and North Mountain Parks are also great tourist attractions with hiking trails and beautiful sceneries.
